Embracing Inner Curiosity
One aspect of Spiritual Study at our Center that is perhaps different than other educational settings is that we shift where we place our educational focus. In a traditional classroom--whether as an adult or as a child--our focus tends to be on outer curiosity. This is curiosity about the world around us, and takes the form of reading books, listening to lectures, and learning from our peers. The emphasis is on learning about something outside ourselves.
At the Center, we practice outer curiosity in a similar way through our classes and Sunday talks, but with an additional emphasis on cultivating a deeper inner curiosity. Why? Because everything that our classes teach is ultimately in service of us empowering our consciousness. We know that if we can change our beliefs, then we can change our lives for the better. This type of work requires us to become vulnerable, though--vulnerable in the sense that we must become willing to look within, even if at first we're not happy with what we see.
It can be scary, for sure. The first time I dove into our Science of Mind teaching, I was faced with parts of myself that I wasn't particularly thrilled with. I saw ways I was acting in the world that invited change. I had to learn to embrace the feeling of vulnerability that came when I examined where I was, and when I accepted that I needed to change if I was going to get where I wanted to go. Spiritual Study gave me the courage, willingness, and practical tools to turn my gaze inward and to lovingly approach those parts of myself that weren't in alignment with my values. It made looking within feel more safe.

Upcoming Classes at the Center
While you contemplate that, I wanted to let you know that we have a number of fantastic classes coming up in April and May that can also help you to fuel your curiosity and grow your own spiritual study practice.
Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life is being taught by Rev. Siota Belle starting on Tuesday, April 4th at 6pm in person at the Center, and will also be taught on Zoom on Saturday, April 8th at 9am. This Core class is designed to give you the practical tools you need to shift any beliefs you have about yourself and the world that aren't working for you. Why shift our beliefs? Because when we do, we also shift how we see the world, and how the world is reflected back to us. This allows us to better navigate the challenges of the world, feeling more joy, freedom, and wholeness in our day-to-day lives.

This will be a hybrid class where you can join in person at the Center or on Zoom as you feel comfortable. Over the course of five weeks we will explore each of our five core spiritual practices: affirmative prayer, meditation, spiritual circulation, selfless service, and spiritual study. Our lives are often filled with changes that we often have no control over. How can we learn to embrace these changes rather than fearing them, or feeling at the mercy of them? This is the class that helps to answer that question.
