The Importance of Building a Spiritual Foundation
Life can be challenging. We can't predict what might happen, and that uncertainty can be stressful. In fact, uncertainty is one of the biggest hurdles I've personally had to build a relationship with in my own life. I really like knowing what's going on, and when life throws me a curveball, it can be frightening.
What has helped me a great deal is knowing that I have a strong spiritual foundation to help me approach each challenge I encounter from a place of love and compassion--for myself and for anyone involved.
Spiritual Mind Treatment, also called Affirmative Prayer, helps me to speak positively with myself, and to remind myself that there is a greater goodness that underlies all of creation. This is incredibly helpful during those moments when it's hard for me to find goodness in a bad situation.
Meditation gives me the mental resilience I need when life gets tough by helping my mind to reorganize itself in a way where I am less reactive. It gives me a feeling of spaciousness and calm that allows me to make more conscious choices.
Spiritual Study keeps me curious about how life, the universe, and everything really works. It helps me to recognize and accept that I can't know everything, and also empowers me to discover more meaning in my life.
Selfless Service opens me up to the idea that I am not alone in our universe. I have boundless opportunities to share my gifts with the world in a way that uplifts all. It encourages me to see that there is a larger force for good at work that I am a part of.
Spiritual Circulation reminds me that I am always in the flow of giving and receiving, and that when I can find balance between those two, my life and the lives of those around me benefit.
These are the five spiritual practices we will explore in Dr. Edward's upcoming class, The Five Pillars of a Spiritual Life. Each week we will learn about a new practice and easy ways we can incorporate that practice into our daily routine so that we might create a strong spiritual foundation to support us when life gets tough.
I've had the privilege and pleasure to assist Dr. Edward with this class, and even though I have been exploring these practices for over ten years, I nevertheless learn something new each time. I hope you will join us on this journey so you might see how these practices can help you build a solid spiritual foundation in your life.
